Abstract

The article analyzed the evolution of the game and its impact on society, with special emphasis on the social, cultural, and personal implications of excessive use of videogames. The problem lay in the increasingly problematic use of videogames as a public health concern. The objective of the study was to generate a critical reflection on video games, recognizing both their potential and their risks, and a balanced analysis was proposed that overcame simplistic views on their use and abuse. A theoretical and documentary review of classical and contemporary sources on the role of play in human development was carried out. Recent studies that addressed the psychological, neuropsychological, physical, and economic consequences of excessive use of video games were also reviewed. An increase in cases of video game addiction was evidenced, supported by international data and examples of extreme cases. In addition, the WHO's recognition of video game use disorder as a public health problem was highlighted. The videogame industry was also identified as a rapidly growing economic sector. The findings made it possible to understand that the problematic use of videogames can constitute a pathology, which requires further study in this regard. It was concluded that it is necessary to be alert to the use of video games in different social and cultural contexts in order to have a critical view of their impact on each of the realities.
