Abstract

Digital transformation has brought about a seismic shift in mathematics teaching and learning processes across various educational levels. Today, the development of AI-driven technological tools and systems is changing how people access knowledge, solve problems, and develop mathematical skills. This article aimed to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in the field of mathematics education. To this end, we conducted a literature review covering research on educational technologies, digital platforms, mathematics learning, pedagogical mediation, and critical thinking in school settings. The results indicate that tools such as GeoGebra, Kahoot, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Photomath foster motivation, interaction, and the understanding of mathematical concepts by creating a more dynamic, personalized, and interactive learning experience. However, the risks associated with indiscriminate use were also identified: technological dependency, a decline in logical reasoning, the automation of answers, and the weakening of skills related to calculation, argumentation, and critical thinking. Consequently, the role of artificial intelligence in mathematics education must be viewed from a critical and reflective pedagogical perspective, where technology serves as a support tool rather than a substitute for the cognitive mechanisms involved in knowledge creation. Finally, we conclude that teacher training and educational strategies must be strengthened to ensure that technological innovation—combined with mathematical and critical thinking—effectively supports an education system capable of meeting the demands of a digitalized world without neglecting the individual development of students.
