Abstract

This study examines the role of teacher discourse as an explicit factor in the mobilization of mathematical knowledge when integrated into technology enhanced learning environtments. In this context, the discourse produced by the teacher enables the conversion of dynamic iconic representations (3D images) into symbolic representations characteristic of the additive structure. This conversion does not occur spontaneously in the student; it requires pedagogical intervention to articulate natural language with formal mathematical language. Thus, the teacher's word transcends the role of information transmitter and acts as a semiotic device that directs the student's attention toward the structural attributes of the mathematical situation, favoring the construction of shared meanings around addition and subtraction operations. From this perspective, technological tolos particularly those incorporating three-dimensional representations and dynamic animations do not replace human mediation but rather expand its semiotic potential by offering new registers of representation upon which teacher discourse acquires meaning. The 3D image then becomes a common reference object that the teacher can point to, name, verbally transform, and link to the corresponding symbolic expression, generating cognitive bridges between the perceptual and the abstract. To this end, classroom situations are analyzed in which discursive mediation articulates dynamic iconic representations with the mathematical notation system, evidencing how the teacher's language acts as the backbone of the learning process.
