Abstract

Parents play an important role in their children's education, as they are the first social group with which every human being interacts. Therefore, they are considered a fundamental pillar in the development of values, emotions, beliefs, and a fundamental axis in their comprehensive education. This scientific essay-style article aims to demonstrate the importance of parental support in the performance of elementary school students and, with this, to demonstrate how this support can significantly benefit their learning and allow the development of not only cognitive but also social and emotional skills that will influence their entire school life. Based on theoretical foundations such as Vygotsky and his sociocultural learning approach, Epstein's effective family involvement program in schools, and Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, the role of parents in school support and its importance for academic performance in elementary education is presented. Furthermore, taking into account the law in Colombia, the Code of Childhood and Adolescence addresses the obligations of the family, which include access to education and providing the necessary conditions for continued education. Institutions are encouraged to provide strategies for parents to provide effective support, allowing them quality time, building bridges for collaboration, parent training, and follow-up.
