Abstract

This article is based on a qualitative, phenomenological research process, using interviews as a data collection tool, with a conveniently selected population. It is developed and presented as a degree project to obtain the title of Specialist in Comprehensive Development of Childhood and Adolescence. The main topic is the management of sexuality in boys and girls with Down Syndrome at a Barranquilla, Colombia Foundation. The results made it possible to identify the experiences of caregivers in the parenting process and aimed at supporting the development of sexuality. According to the results obtained, it can be identified that, regarding the topic of sexuality, there are still many prejudices and taboos that hinder the communication and guidance that parents should have with their children in this regard and in the case of the population it is combined with the feelings facing disability, creating greater barriers to address from home. Likewise, it is evident that families require greater support from the institutions, based on access to clear information by health professionals, especially information and its affordability. Finally, it is noted that bonding in secondary socialization environments favors both parental exercise and the development of social and life skills in children with Down Syndrome.
