Abstract

Language and four of its uses, reading, writing, speaking, and listening (LEOE), are highlighted as fundamental elements of communication in schools. Given their cross-cutting nature in education, normative, didactic, research, and relational sources are consulted to support the argument as an educational proposal. A general overview of the Ibero-American situation is presented, based on multilateral meetings that reveal shortcomings and needs within the book ecosystem, a factor inherently linked to the region's educational and social systems. Narrative-style descriptions present a timeline of the evolution of communication, from personal perceptions to the dissemination and use of knowledge in and with different tools. From this, a series of motivating suggestions for daily school practices are offered to the reader. Overall, a personal invitation is extended to promote communication as a means of facilitating reading.
