This article examines the main challenges of mathematics teaching in lower secondary education, specifically in rural contexts of Colombia, taking the municipality of Santa Bárbara (Santander) as a reference. It argues that students’ low performance is not only due to material limitations, but mainly to the lack of pedagogical relevance and the predominance of a mechanistic model. In response to this scenario, approaches are proposed that integrate local campesino knowledge with innovative strategies. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, along with the cultural perspectives of Bishop and D’Ambrosio, make it possible to recognize cognitive and cultural diversity, fostering more meaningful learning. The study concludes that educational transformation requires pedagogical innovation, context-based teacher training, and public policies that promote equity.
