Abstract

This review article explores the historical evolution of the concept of teaching from multiple perspectives within the educational sphere. The analysis is conducted through a documentary research approach, grounded in a bibliographic review and employing procedures of content analysis and theoretical comparison. It draws upon both classical and contemporary texts, spanning from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. The examination of diverse theories that position teaching as a central element highlights a significant transformation: from the mere transmission of knowledge by the teacher to an active and dynamic interaction between teacher and student. This shift has been particularly shaped by movements such as the New School and constructivism, as well as by debates concerning the role of the teacher, whether as a guide or as an authoritarian figure. The study reveals tensions between traditional teaching approaches and contemporary perspectives that seek to empower the student as an active participant in their own learning process. In conclusion, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of teaching, underscoring its importance in both human and social development, while also suggesting the need to reconceptualize it beyond the simple transmission of knowledge, integrating cognitive, cultural, and social dimensions.
